Under the Microscope: Church Bloopers!

The ‘Under the Microscope’ series of blog posts explores items that I have helped to catalogue and digitise for the Teams of Our Lady Transatlantic Super-Regional archive.

Church Bloopers!

One of the things that I like most about working on the Teams of Our Lady Transatlantic Super-Regional collections, are the surprises that occasionally pop up.

One such surprise came as I was digitising the collection of Teesside Sector newsletters, Teams Link. These newsletters form one of many series that make up the large collection of newsletters held by the archive. At first glance, this particular newsletter looked just like any other Teams Link newsletter…

Teams Sector newsletters were produced to keep Teams couples and Chaplains up-to-date on events in the Teams calendar and provide Teams news. They would also usually include articles from individual Teams couples, a message from the Sector Couple, dates for the diary, prayers, and contact details for  couples in particular roles across the sector and wider region.

In this particular Summer 2001 edition, a humorous entry about Church Bulletin Bloopers caught my eye…

I must apologise for the grainy image quality!

  1. Bertha Belch, a missionary from Africa will be speaking tonight at Cavalry Memorial Church in Racine – come tonight and hear Bertha Belch all the way from Africa.
  2. Ladies, don’t forget the rummage sale. It’s a chance to get rid of those things not worth keeping around the house. Don’t forget your husbands.
  3. The sermon this morning: ‘Jesus Walks on the Water’. the sermon tonight: ‘Searching for Jesus’.
  4. Remember in prayer the many who are sick of our community.
  5. Don’t let worry kill you off – let the Church help!
  6. At the evening service tonight the sermon topic will be ‘What is Hell?’ Come early and listen to our choir practice.
  7. For those of you who have children and don’t know it, we have a nursery downstairs.
  8. The ladies of the church have cast off clothing of every kind. They may be seen in the basement on Friday afternoon.
  9. Low Self Esteem Support Group will meet Thursday at 7.00pm. Please use the back door.
  10. Weight watchers will meet at 7.00pm at the First Presbyterian Church. Please use large double door at the side entrance.

When I was a child I didn’t like being taken to church, I found it really boring. Not so boring now, as such seemingly innocent bulletins become humorous quips!

What about you? Have you stumbled across any surprises in an archive?
